Ujjain Launches ₹674 Crore Water Overhaul for Simhasth 2028 and Future Needs

**UJJAIN, August 2:** The Ujjain Municipal Corporation (UMC) has officially invited bids for a massive ₹673.81 crore project to augment the city's water supply system, with a primary focus on the upcoming Simhasth 2028 Mahakumbh and securing water resources for the population until 2043. The tender, dated August 2, 2025, outlines a comprehensive plan to upgrade and expand the city's water infrastructure within a stringent 24-month completion period. The project aims to address the current insufficiency of water sources to meet the present and future demands of Ujjain's growing population and the massive influx of devotees expected for Simhasth. The goal is to provide 401 million litres per day (MLD) of treated water during the festival. Key components of this ambitious undertaking include: * **New Water Sources:** Construction of two new 14-meter diameter intake wells—one at Gambhir Dam to draw 70 MLD and another near the NVDA pipeline discharge point at Nagfani to draw 100 MLD. * **Treatment Capacity Boost:** The project includes the construction of five new Water Treatment Plants (WTPs) with a combined capacity of 250 MLD, alongside the renovation of existing old plants. * **Reservoir Expansion:** 17 new overhead reservoirs will be built across different locations, adding a combined storage capacity of 38,000 kilolitres (KL). * **Extensive Pipeline Network:** A vast network of pipelines will be laid, including approximately 39.75 km for raw water and 136.39 km for clear water transmission. A distribution network spanning nearly 534 km will also be established to ensure equitable supply. * **New Household Connections:** The plan includes providing 49,087 new house service connections, significantly expanding the reach of the piped water system. * **Modernization:** The entire water supply system will be monitored and controlled by a modern PLC-SCADA system to ensure efficiency and effective management. Citizens can expect significant construction activity across the city, including extensive road cutting for pipeline installation. The tender document specifies that the contractor will be responsible for the restoration of these roads. Following the 24-month construction phase, the successful bidder will be responsible for the complete operation and maintenance (O&M) of the entire water supply system, including both existing and newly created assets, for a period of 10 years. The initial two years of this period will be considered a Defect Liability Period (DLP), ensuring the quality and durability of the work performed.
